Day 1, San José:

Bienvenidos a Costa Rica! After you arrive to San José’s Juan Santamaría International Airport, your driver will take you to an oasis in the heart of the city – the charming Apartotel La Sabana. Take to the city on foot and discover historic architecture, tree-lined boulevards and the delightfully chaotic street-life of Costa Rica’s capital, or catch some R&R to prepare you for an action-packed day tomorrow.

Day 2, San José to La Fortuna:

Your jungle adventure begins today as you wind through Braulio Carrillo National Park to one of Costa Rica’s wildest jungles – the river gorge surrounding the Pacuare River. Leave your luggage on the bus and climb in for an exhilarating 4-hour white water rafting trip down one of the world's most exotic and scenic rivers, stopping for lunch along the way. After you've completed the trip, join up with your luggage once more for a two-hour drive through serene highlands to beautiful La Fortuna, where you'll check into a stunning Smithsonian Suite at Arenal Observatory Lodge, featuring spectacular views of Arenal Volcano, right from your bed!

Day 3, La Fortuna:

Today, discover La Fortuna, Costa Rica’s adventure capital, in the shadow of one of Costa Rica's biggest touristic draws - the magnificent Arenal Volcano. Take advantage of the ample lodge facilities, setting out on a complimentary guided forest walk, exploring the gardens and self-guided trails, or relaxing poolside with a good book. In the afternoon, set out for a leisurely hike of Arenal Reserve to take in stunning views and spot rainforest wildlife along trails that skirt the volcano’s base. Next, head to the luxe Tabacón Hot Springs for dinner and some R&R, as you soak your tired muscles in dozens of warm pools of varying sizes, temperatures, and degrees of privacy, and let the sounds of the cascading waterfalls lull you into a state of deep relaxation.

Day 4, La Fortuna:

After breakfast, prepare for one of the most extreme activities available in Costa Rica. Journey deep into the jungle to up the intensity and go beyond the canyoning that you already know and love.

Get your heart pumping with a first rappel down an impressive 140-ft waterfall, dropping into a deep crystalline pool before swimming to shore and continuing through the canyon. Then, jump off a series of 10 to 30-ft waterfalls into deep canyon pools and experience the ultimate in wild water fun. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, stop for a tasty local lunch, and then head back to Arenal Observatory Lodge to enjoy one last beautiful sunset from your private volcano-view deck.

Day 5, La Fortuna to Monteverde:

In the morning, head west on a shuttle and boat transfer across Lake Arenal to Santa Elena, a quiet rural town set against rolling hills. Ascend into the lush cloud forest that carpets the slopes of the Monteverde Reserve, to the charming, family-owned Casa Batsú. Pay a visit to the hanging bridges, kick back with a book on your private deck, or set out to try to catch a glimpse of the Resplendent Quetzal, a beautiful bird with an iridescent green body, red breast, and long tail plumes.

In the evening, depart at sunset for a night hike to get acquainted with the jungle critters that go bump in the night, encountering insects, amphibians and mammals that you’d otherwise miss during the day.

Day 6, Monteverde:

Begin the day with a hearty breakfast before riding into the mists of the cloud forest to get a taste of adrenaline in the place where zip lining began! Monteverde’s Original Canopy Tour, developed in 1992, was the first zip line in the world designed to be a recreational activity for travelers. Get your heart racing on a thrilling series of 15 zip lines that crisscross over 1 200 acres of private virgin cloud forest preserve.

Day 7, Monteverde to Santa Teresa:

Today, you’ll wind through the scenic central highlands, and then through tropical dry forest on the Nicoya Peninsula to the beautiful, quiet beachside town of Santa Teresa. Check into the luxe Casa Marbella boutique hotel, situated on a hillside with panoramic ocean views. Settle in to enjoy the sun and the lovely vistas from your private deck, or check out the beautiful infinity pool.

Day 8, Santa Teresa:

After breakfast, take off on an adrenaline-stoking adventure, mounting up on an ATV and heading north along back roads and forest trails, and charging through rivers all the way to Coyote. Here, trade your ATV for a kayak, and explore the mangroves from the water, paddling through the peaceful estuary where the only sounds you’ll hear are from birds and resident wildlife. Stop for lunch at a typical Costa Rican restaurant and dine on the beach before returning to Casa Marbella in the afternoon.

Day 9, Santa Teresa:

Enjoy your last beach day at your leisure. Take a dip in the ocean, hike to the beautiful Montezuma Falls, where three large pools await adventurous cliff jumpers and swimmers, or relax by the pool with a good book. At dinnertime, when the sun begins to fall below the horizon, meet on the beach for a private three course dinner just for two. As the stars come out, head down to the beach to enjoy a stretch of white sand all to yourself with a romantic oceanfront dinner by candlelight. We promise it will be a truly memorable experience.

Day 10, Departure:

From North America: several airlines offer direct and connecting flights to Costa Rica’s two international airports: Juan Santamaría International Airport in San José (airport code: SJO) and Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia (airport code: LIR). Including connection time, flights from the USA typically range from 2.5-9 hours in duration, while most flights from Canada range from 9-15 hours in duration.

From the UK: there are currently no direct flights to Costa Rica from the UK, but there are several flight options connecting in the United States and/or Canada. Including connection time, flights from the UK typically range from 12-18 hours in duration.

When you arrive in SJO or LIR, there will be an airport transfer waiting to take you to your hotel downtown, or in some cases, your next destination. If you have questions about flights, or require assistance booking, please contact us here. We're here to help!
