A place of meandering rivers, seductive coastlines & unspoiled rainforest, Costa Rica accounts for less than half a percent of the earth’s surface, but contains nearly 6% of its biodiversity. Journey north to Tortuguero, and cruise the canals as monkeys swing in the trees overhead. Then, head south to the remote Osa Peninsula to encounter iconic frogs and macaws, endangered monkeys, and more than 300 bird species. Day 1, San José:

Welcome to Costa Rica! Upon arrival, you’ll be met by your driver and whisked away to the elegant Grano de Oro Hotel – an oasis in the heart of the capital, and the perfect place to rest your head before a busy day tomorrow.

Day 2, San José to Tortuguero:

Your jungle adventure begins today as you step off your early morning flight into Tortuguero, an expansive national park characterized by a labyrinth of rivers and canals running through lush virgin rainforest brimming with wildlife. Check into your all-inclusive retreat at Tortuga Lodge & Gardens and enjoy a tropical lunch in the open-air restaurant overlooking the river.

Spend your afternoon poolside or exploring the self-guided lodge trails.

Day 3, Tortuguero:

In a world where roads and trails don’t exist, the only way to explore is by boat. A day in Tortuguero isn’t complete without a meandering cruise through the canals that run through the 77 000 acre reserve. In the early morning hours, you’re likely to catch wildlife seeking their energy source for the day. Howler monkeys, Northern Jacanas, and even river otters will be out hunting, while caimans quietly wait for their next meal.

Head back to the lodge for lunch and a swim and then back out into the park for the afternoon, when you’re likely to catch egrets and herons moving toward their nests, and white-faced capuchins and spider monkeys cruising through the rainforest canopy until sunset. As the afternoon light dims, the cacophony of the forest comes to a climax, and then as if on cue, quiet.

If you’re traveling between June & September, ask us about adding a turtle nesting tour to your package.

Day 4, Tortuguero to Cabo Matapalo:

This morning you’ll fly back to San José, and then off to Puerto Jiménez, your jumping-off point for the next leg of your Costa Rican wildlife experience. From town, you’ll venture to Lapa Rios Lodge, an unparalleled luxury experience in an immersive destination where the real treat is in living and breathing the jungle. With four nights on the Osa, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the incredible biodiversity of this unique location.Tonight, enjoy starry skies and dinner by candlelight at a table just for two overlooking the lush Osa jungle and the Pacific Ocean. This is rainforest romance at its finest.

Day 5, Cabo Matapalo:

Hike amidst ancient trees through virgin rainforest to a secluded waterfall to savor a private lunch together in the heart of the forest. Take a refreshing dip in the plunge pool post-dessert, then finish your bottle of wine in the sunshine before splashing back to the lodge along the Carbonera River.

At dusk, experience the magic of the rainforest by night as you uncover the hidden world of unusual nocturnal creatures. Discover several species of frogs, including red eyed tree frogs and smoky jungle frogs, snakes, bats, marsupials and a myriad of interesting insects. Return to the lodge in time for dinner.

Day 6, Cabo Matapalo:

Descend through the reserve’s most remote and pristine rainforest with a naturalist guide. Experience raw Osa nature, with a hike along the cool ridges of Lapa Rios’ most impressive primary and secondary forest, following trails surrounded by enormous trees and rare flora and fauna.

After lunch, learn about the marine biology of the Golfo Dulce, one of only four tropical fjords in the world, as you tour pristine palm-fringed beaches in search of land crabs, starfish and sea cucumbers.

Day 7, Cabo Matapalo:

Depart Lapa Rios bright and early for a one-hour transfer along the scenic road to Carate, where you’ll enter world-famous Corcovado National Park, called the most “biologically intense place on earth” by National Geographic. Your naturalist guide will lead you on a half-day hike along a trail skirting the Pacific Coast, with expansive golden beaches on one side and lush lowland tropical forest on the other. Widely considered to be the crowned jewel of the extensive system of national parks in Costa Rica, the park is home to some of the world’s rarest wildlife, including jaguars, peccaries, tapirs, and 450 bird species.

Day 8, Departure:

Catch a quick one-hour flight from Puerto Jiménez to San José’s international airport for your flight home. Adios!
